Course Overview
PADI Reactivate is a personalized refresher designed for certified divers who haven't dived in 6 months or more. This isn't a re-certification — it's a tailored skills update based on your specific situation, so you're genuinely ready and confident before your next dive.
The course has three parts: a knowledge review (revisiting dive safety, procedures, and techniques), confined water skills assessment (pool work to confirm and practice your foundational skills), and an open-water dive (a real dive in Sai Kung to reapply skills in the ocean).
I start by talking with you about your diving history — when you last dived, what courses you've taken, which skills feel rusty — and then structure the refresher around what you actually need. Everyone's Reactivate looks different because everyone's break has different reasons and different durations.
Many certified divers take a years-long break due to work demands, life changes (moving, having children, COVID years), then want to start diving again. That's completely normal. The key is not to "force a comeback" and hope for the best — a Reactivate tells you exactly where you stand, so you can dive with real confidence.
Who is this course for?
An honest look at who this course is — and isn't — for.
This course is for you if…
- Certified divers (OW or above) who haven't dived in 6 months to several years
- Planning an upcoming dive trip and want to confirm readiness beforehand
- Skills feel rusty and want to rebuild confidence safely with instructor supervision
- Want to refresh foundations before pursuing AOW or technical courses
- Certified elsewhere but never dived in Hong Kong waters; want to get familiar
Maybe not for you if…
- Anyone without any diving certification (consider DSD or OW)
- Divers who dived within the last 6 months and are in good skill condition
- Expecting Reactivate to include EFR first aid refresher (that's a separate course)
- Want to upgrade skills to an advanced level (enroll in the appropriate course instead)
Course Schedule
Actual scheduling adapts to weather and your progress.
Step 1 — Pre-course assessment
Knowledge review discussion
Before the water work, I have a relaxed conversation with you about your diving history and why you took a break. We then review the knowledge areas most relevant to you: safety procedures, equipment operation, emergency handling. This isn't a test — it's helping me understand your starting point so the rest of the training is targeted.
Theory refresher can be done in person (Tsim Sha Tsui by default) or moved to Zoom, depending on how deep a refresher you need.
Step 2 — Pool skills
Confined water skills assessment and practice
In the pool, review and practice foundational skills: assembling and donning equipment, regulator clearing, mask clearing, neutral buoyancy, emergency ascent procedures. Based on your performance, I'll determine which skills need more work and which you've retained well. There's no fixed mandatory checklist — we adjust entirely to your needs.
Step 3 — Open water
Sai Kung open-water dive
Complete 1-2 open-water dives in Sai Kung, applying the pool-refreshed skills in a real environment. Depth is set by your existing certification and current condition — never exceeding your cert limit. Reacquaint yourself with the Hong Kong underwater environment and find your comfort again.

Safety is non-negotiable
The safety foundation of Reactivate is honest self-assessment — not assuming "I learned this before, so I'm fine." Someone who stopped diving for a year needs a very different refresher than someone who's been away for five years; an OW diver and a Rescue Diver return from a break with different starting points.
This is exactly why the personalized structure matters: I don't apply a one-size standard to everyone. I evaluate your actual performance in the pool and determine from there whether you're ready for open water. If I feel you need another pool session, I'll tell you directly — I won't take you to sea just to "save time."
Health declaration forms are required for all diving courses, including Reactivate. If you've had surgery, a new diagnosis, or started medications during your break from diving, let me know via WhatsApp in advance so we can assess whether medical clearance is needed before the course.
