Course Overview

The Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW) is the natural next step after your Open Water certification. The course consists of 5 Adventure Dives — Deep diving and Underwater Navigation are mandatory; you choose the other 3 based on your interests: night diving, wreck diving, fish identification, or Peak Performance Buoyancy are popular choices. In Hong Kong, the available specialties are: Night Diving, Search & Recovery, and Peak Performance Buoyancy.

There's no written exam — AOW is entirely skill-based. Complete the 5 dives and you receive your PADI AOW certification, extending your maximum depth from 18 to 30 metres.

Many divers ask: can I do AOW right after OW? Technically yes, but I recommend logging 10-15 Fun Dives first to solidify your foundations — you'll get much more out of AOW. If you're already comfortable and have the dive experience, AOW fits neatly into a weekend.

The course is highly flexible. Planning a trip to the Maldives? Add fish identification. Want to dive deep in Thailand? Deep diving pairs well with Nitrox. I'll help you pick the 5 specialties that best match your goals.

Who is this course for?

An honest look at who this course is — and isn't — for.

This course is for you if…

  • OW divers who have logged some Fun Dives and want to progress
  • Want to dive deeper (to 30m) and expand skills
  • Planning challenging dive destinations abroad (Maldives, Palau, Cocos)
  • Want more advanced technique training under instructor supervision
  • Interested in specific specialties (night diving, wreck, fish ID)

Maybe not for you if…

  • Just got OW but have fewer than 10 Fun Dives (build experience first)
  • Noticeably uncomfortable or anxious about depth
  • Still struggling with basic buoyancy control (more Fun Dives recommended first)
  • Expecting AOW to be a relaxed leisure activity (this is a structured training course)

Course Schedule

Actual scheduling adapts to weather and your progress.

1

Day 1

Deep dive + Underwater navigation (mandatory)

Complete the two mandatory dives. The deep dive takes you to 30 metres, covering nitrogen narcosis awareness, gas management, and depth planning. Underwater navigation trains you to find your way using a compass and natural references without visual landmarks.

In addition to the online PADI eLearning, theory includes in-person discussion and Q&A. Conducted in Tsim Sha Tsui by default. If you can't attend in person, sessions can be moved to Zoom or arranged at a designated café.

Full day (2 dives)
2

Day 2

3 elective specialty dives

Complete 3 dives in your pre-chosen specialties. Popular choices include peak performance buoyancy (take your buoyancy skills to the next level), fish identification (learn Hong Kong's common marine life), and night diving (your first experience underwater in darkness).

Full day (3 dives)

Safety is non-negotiable

AOW involves diving to 30 metres, which demands stricter attention to gas consumption, nitrogen narcosis risk, and decompression planning. Before the course, I'll assess your buoyancy control and gas management to confirm you're ready for the challenges of greater depth.

During the deep dive, I control descent rate (no faster than 18m per minute), monitor bottom time carefully, and ensure adequate safety stop time. All planning follows PADI No-Decompression Limits — I don't push boundaries for the sake of it.

For night dives or other specialty environments, I brief all special safety procedures thoroughly before you enter the water. If weather or conditions are unsuitable on the day, we reschedule without question.
